Te Ara i Whiti is a free outdoor experience where light, art, and imagination collide. Illuminated installations and sculptural works weave through the night, celebrating contemporary design and the connections between people and place.
For nearly a decade, this beloved exhibition has opened a pathway for local and Māori artists, emerging and established names alike, to push boundaries and create something extraordinary.
Around 140,000 people have walked that path, and it continues to inspire the imaginations of all who experience it.
At its heart is a creative partnership between curator Melanie Tangaere Baldwin and globally acclaimed lighting designer Angus Muir, who have worked together to craft an experience that invites you to slow down, look up, and remember you’re allowed to dream.
Te Ara i Whiti has grown significantly with a diverse range of artistic disciplines and styles breathing life and wonderment into the experience of public art.
Part immersive light trail, part launchpad for emerging talent, Te Ara i Whiti is where the creativity of Te Tairāwhiti comes to life.
It has grown into one of Aotearoa’s most significant events on the national arts calendar, continually showing new works by some of Aotearoa’s most celebrated artists, and every year brings something new to discover.
