Te Ara Minhinnick

Te Puuaha

Te Puuaha gives form to the first breath of life, carrying the line of descent from one generation to the next.

This work extends an ongoing exploration of the wharetangata as a vessel of rest. It carries the tangi of three generations of waahine from my whaanau, with the voices of my nan, mum, and sister singing waiata to peepi in the womb.

Its form is inspired by taonga puuoro, where openings enable breath to flow through and transform into sound.

Te Puuaha invites people to enter, rest within, and experience the space through sound.

Tihei, mauri ora.

Artist Bio

(Ngaati Te Ata)

Through sculpture and installation, Te Ara’s work is shaped by relationships to place and by the knowledge and obligations carried by its people.

Te Ara’s practice grows from time spent alongside the waterways and whenua of her rohe.

Following their shorelines, Te Ara gathers uku, onepuu and whenua, working with these materials as carriers of whakapapa, memory and ancestral presence.
