Māia Keane

Ko Hākirirangi ka ū kei uta

This inflatable pou honours the tipuna, Hinehākirirangi
The kaitiaki of the kūmara seeds aboard the Horouta waka
Carrying the precious taonga within her woven kete
She moved along the coastline
Arriving at the rich soils of Manawarū at Āraiteuru
Where the seeds of Hawaiki were planted
Ensuring the wellbeing of generations to come

Within her kete she carried the kūmara seeds
Between her legs she carried the tapu of the waka
Her body adorned with symbols of whakapapa

You are invited to sit in her kete and take the position of the seeds she carried. Remember that you too are sown from the rich soils of Hawaiki. Carried and nurtured by the hands of your tipuna.

Or you could move to the kūmara seats and reflect upon Hākirirangi. Be the kūmara planted by our ancestors in this whenua. Consider what has been sown into you, and what you will carry forward for those yet to come.

Ko Hākirirangi ka ū kei uta
te kōwhai ka ngaora
ka ringitia te kete
ko Manawarū, ko Āraiteuru
